With the 16:00 GMT position report out, “Telefónica” with Iker Martínez has moved back into the provisional top spot on the second leg of the Volvo Ocean Race from Cape Town (South Africa) to Abu Dhabi (UAE).
The Spanish entry has managed to move up to the top of the leaderboard thanks to some different tactics to those employed by the rest of the fleet, hugging the African coastline and scraping back the 25 miles between the boat and the leader just two days ago. Navigator Andrew Cape this morning said: "The positions have moved around a lot and there's still a long way to go. I don't really know how things will play out over the next few days... We have a plan, but we're not telling! Honestly, that was the first time I've sailed so close to the coast docking out from South Africa to get better breeze. We gybed this morning and we were the last boat to do so. It's done now and Africa is behind us". Their sights are now on Mauritius, which the fleet must put to port, as it's where the exclusion zone set out in the anti-piracy plan begins.
According to the most recent report, "Teléfonica" is pushing forward as leader on an easterly course at 14 knots with an eight-mile lead on her most direct rival, Arab boat "Abu Dhabi". American entry "Puma" is 22 miles away and the New Zealanders on "Camper" are 44 miles from the Spaniards. Chinese crew "Sanya" and the French entry "Groupama" are 57 and 60 nautical miles away respectively.
