"Telefónica" became the first boat in the Volvo Ocean Race fleet to begin training in Abu Dhabi waters today. Iker Martínez and crew were eager to commence training as early as possible to prepare for the light air conditions ahead. At 11:00am Abu Dhabi time the crew of the Spanish yacht cast off their line and didn't return to port until five hours later, despite the light 5 knots blowing in the Persian Gulf.
"We've been carrying out manoeuvres in light breeze to train for the in-port race on Friday: gybing, tacks... and we've also been trying out some new sails", explained Bowman on "Telefónica" Antonio 'Ñeti' Cuervas Mons. This first feel of the racecourse confirmed the initial suspicions of the round-the-worlders on ESP-1 that this "would be a complicated race with light breeze and one that could be anyone's", said the Spaniard.
Tomorrow (Tuesday) Team Telefónica will continue with their training schedule and will be unfurling their sails once again in the Persian Gulf.
