The Volvo Open 70 "Telefónica" is now sailing to the West of the island of El Hierro on her second day of sailing around the Canary Islands.
Following a first day and night of strong winds (around 25 knots) which washed water all over the deck, whilst allowing the Spanish crew to sail very fast indeed especially during the night, the boat skippered by Iker Martínez has now slowed down to 10 knots. No time to panic though, as first-timer and Media Crew Member Diego Fructuoso explained, with El Hierro being put leeward and "behaving like a wall by not letting the wind through."
In regatta mode at last
On board "Telefónica" this voyage around the Canaries is being experienced as a real regatta. Before setting off from Marina Rubicón, the watch patterns were carefully designed so that each crew member would take up their specific position and the watches carried out just as they will in full round the world mode.
"It's going really well. It's the first time we have trained as if we were racing. We are all in our positions and we're working watches as if we were in a regatta, instead of merely testing, which was a lot less interesting...," said Spaniard Pepe Ribes, who'll be sailing around the planet for the fourth time in the next Volvo Ocean Race.
Soon towards La Palma
With El Hierro in sight, "Telefónica" will soon put the smallest and furthest West of the islands in the archipelago of the Canaries to starboard as they head towards La Palma. "That's the last island before home at Marina Rubicón," said Diego Fructuoso. It is likely to be a sail upwind (wind coming head on) and the Spanish crew hopes to find some strong winds.
"We hope everything continues to go just as well!," signed off the Spaniard.
Let's hope so Diego!
