HRH THE PRINCE OF ASTURIAS VISITS SPAIN'S “TELEFÓNICA” ROUND THE WORLD CREW IN LISBON

06-01-2012

HRH Prince Felipe of Asturias paid a visit to the Spanish round the world sailing team “Telefónica”'s base today in Lisbon, making the most of a window in the schedule of his official three day trip to Portugal which drew to a close today. During the meeting with the Spanish team lead by Olympic champion Iker Martínez the Prince of Asturias demonstrated his interest in the competition, which saw the finish of one of its legs in the Portuguese capital in the early hours of the morning. The Portuguese city was the destination for the end of the seventh leg of racing which was sailed between Miami (USA) and Lisbon (Portugal) with the fleet traversing the Atlantic Ocean from west to east.

Iker Martínez and fellow Olympic champion Xabi Fernández, Spanish round the world sailor Pepe Ribes and the Volvo Ocean Race's CEO, Norway's Knut Frostad, among others joined the Prince of Asturias on a route through the workshop of the Spanish team's base, with HRH Prince Felipe of Spain witnessing the repairs being carried out first hand to fix damage incurred during the 3,600 mile (6,667 km) course between the ports of Miami and Lisbon. He saw how the Spanish team is preparing the boat for the start of the next leg which kicks off on Sunday June 10th and will take the fleet from Lisbon to the French port of Lorient.

During the royal visit, HRH Prince Felipe of Asturias passed a message of support on to the “Telefónica” skipper and to the rest of the crew from the boat's Godmother, HRH Princess Letizia of Asturias.
