It's been less than 48 hours since "Telefónica" reached Alicante and there are 37 days to go until the first inshore regatta of the Volvo Ocean Race, and there's not a moment to spare.
This morning, in the area reserved for the team bases at the Port of Alicante, “Telefónica” was lifted off the water to undergo a ten-day refit, starting today and finishing on October 2nd.
This is a process to add the finishing touches to the boat, the final check-over ahead of the start. Following some 9,000 miles of training. These are the final improvements and the final potential changes... and these are ten key days that will take the yacht and her crew to hit the starting line of the inshore race in the 29th of October with the best possible guarantees.
However, the first job for “Telefónica” today was to undergo some measurements, as Spanish Trimmer Xabi Fernández explains: “The official measuring of the entries usually takes place some ten days before the first inshore race. What we are doing here is checking over some final measurements and details for ourselves to avoid any setbacks that may delay or complicate matters when we undergo the official checks”.
On the 2nd of October “Telefónica” will be back on the water and two days later she'll be training fundamentally focussed on coastal races or 'inshore' sailing.
Meanwhile, with the shore crew working hard on the boat refit, the “Telefónica” crew are able to enjoy a well-deserved rest which will surely allow them to recharge their batteries for the start of the eleventh edition of the Volvo Ocean Race.
