This Friday, the 7th of October will be an important date in the Team Telefónica history. At 11:30am the Spanish round the world team will all be part of the ceremony to name the Princess as Godmother, and of the handing over of the Spanish flag to the yacht. It will take place in the Volvo Ocean Race Village, in the Muelle de Levante at the Port of Alicante, the starting point for the 2011-2012 regatta.
"Telefónica", with the double Olympic medallist Iker Martínez leading the team, is setting out to fulfil one of Spanish sailing's pending objectives: to win the round the world race with an extra special Godmother: HRH the Princess of Asturias, who will be joined by HRH the Prince of Asturias. The Mayoress of Alicante, Sonia Castedo, and the President of the region of Valencia, Alberto Fabra, are also joining them for the ceremony.
A Spanish project, made in Spain
Team Telefónica is a Spanish project directed by Pedro Campos from Galicia, with the yacht designed at the Valencian Juan K studio, and built at the King Marine shipyard at Alginet (Valencia), skippered by Spanish sailing success Iker Martínez and with three training bases in Spain: Sanxenxo (Pontevedra), Marina Rubicón (Lanzarote) and Alicante.
The team is back in the Volvo Ocean Race for a third time, a test of human endurance, a logistical and technological challenge that is difficult to find in any other sport and for which the Spaniards have thoroughly prepared.
