Xabi Fernández took his first world title in 1992 in the Youth Vaurien Class.
In 1999 Xabi Fernández joined forces with Spaniard Iker Martínez to compete in the 49er Olympic Class, where they quickly progressed from sparring inside the Spanish team to training for the Sydney Olympics, going on to win gold in 2004 at Athens. Three World and European titles and a silver medal in the Beijing Games in 2008 are also other of his victories.
In 2005 Xabi left the 49er Class for a time to focus on a brand new exciting adventure, taking part in the Volvo Ocean Race. Thus, in the 2005-06 edition the Basque sailor joined the only Spanish entry in the regatta, sailing onboard the Volvo Open 70 “movistar”.
After the Beijing Games, Xabi made the move back into offshore sailing onboard 'Telefónica Blue' to race in the Volvo Ocean Race 2008-09. Along with ten other crew members Fernández took third place in the overall rankings.
He also has competed in the Barcelona World Race 2010-2011, where Xabi together with Iker, became the first crew of the 14 that set off from Barcelona on the 31st of December to sail around the world and to reach the Catalan city having made no stops and without receiving any external assistance.
But there are goals to achieve yet. Next one: the Volvo Ocean Race 2011-2012 onboard “Telefónica”.
