Spaniard Diego Fructuoso is facing what is set to be the challenge of a lifetime. Not only is he making his début in the Volvo Ocean Race with Team Telefónica, but he's doing so as their Media Crew, a position requiring communications and technical skills in video and filming, photography and journalism all carried out in the extreme on board conditions experienced in this round the world competition.
He made his début on a Volvo Open 70 during the most recent Round Britain and Ireland Race on “Telefónica Blue”. As a sailor Diego has long been involved in olympic sailing, mainly in the Finn and Star classes, as his CV shows. He sailed along with Olympic champion José Mª Van der Ploeg in the latter, becoming European runner-up in 2002.
Fructuoso also has experience in the TP 52 class, having taken part in the MedCup Circuit with the Spanish teams “Caixagalicia” and “Balearia”, as well as in other cruiser classes where he has sailed three seasons with “Murcia Turística” and reached runner-up position in the RI2 class with “Movistar”, in the 2010 King's Cup (Copa del Rey).
